Precision in Design

Posted by in Uncategorized

A few months ago a new logo for my sportsclub popped up. I didn’t like it and still don’t. I’ve been thinking a lot what is was that bothered me so much. And although I have issues with the appearance and what it stand for, what bothered me the most was the lack of precision and the ‘this is good enough‘ attitude that came with it. At 31Volts, we design for innovation. Our daily work is sketchy. Explorative. We prototype, break stuff and hot glue it together again. We make…read more

Design education please!

Posted by in Uncategorized

I think we should teach design at primary schools, starting today. Earlier I wrote why I think I might have been a designer all my life. Not the rockstar designer that I was meant to be looking back to my time at design-school. Nop. What I mean is that I’ve always been trying to figure things out. I know of designers that -as kids- tore apart radio’s and camera’s just out of curiosity on what’s inside. I was one of them. At school, I was ok in the creative department….read more

Creating value or selling out

Posted by in Uncategorized

Crazy things are happening at this moment in the Dutch political arena. I truly thought we were moving into an age of creating value. At least most of our clients realize that they will never move forward by cutting costs. There just isn’t any value to be found nor value to be created by cutting costs. Money can never be an incentive. And then we find politicians fighting over a new policy for healthcare that would move autonomy towards the insurance companies. They would gain power when it comes to…read more

The Kid Designer

When I was at primary and later at high-school we had all sorts of creative classes. We did music, we did theater, we had drawing classes and later art history. Many of these lessons were there to build your overall knowledge and providing a sense of history. Music has always been something I couldn’t figure out. I love music and think I can understand it, recognizes good or at least interesting music. I have the same with art like painting and sculpture. Looking back I was more of a builder,…read more

The best way to predict the future is to create it.

~ Quote by Abraham Lincoln, Alan Kay and Buckminster Fuller. ~ This is a very old quote dating back to at least the mid 19th century and has been around since. This is a very old quote dating back to at least the mid 19th century and has been around since. The strange thing is that this quote haven’t had any impact on how we act. What I mean by that is although we could talk about creation, we talk about predictions. Predictions for the future. Especially in these first…read more

Skills for the future

Posted by in Uncategorized

It’s been almost a year ago that I visited a symposium at the KNAW, The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam. [link to event, in dutch.] The KNAW organize a lot of very interesting events on all kinds of scientific topics. Its’ the house of science and knowledge. Not the place where you will find many creatives, I might be the exception to the rule here. However, I had been there before. It’s always good to be among people that are smarter than your are. In the…read more

Ideas are NOT the problem!

Posted by in Uncategorized

I just cannot follow how many times I read about good ideas! Lets come up with some good ideas! Out of the box ones, those are the best! Or a disruptive one, if possible! We need new ideas for the future! And I just don’t get it. Ideas, ladies and gentleman, are NOT! the problem. Ideas are easy. You just need loads of them because ‘The secret to a good idea is to have a lot of them.’ (Kars Alfrink in Making Progress min 33:00) I learned this already in…read more

Designers are not important, at all!

Posted by in Uncategorized

What I mean by that, to get straight to the essence, is that design as way of working (design as the activity) is far more important than the name label on the final result (design as the legitimization of quality). At least as a topic to talk about, I think! Although perhaps not educated at a design school, everyone designs all the time. Think about cooking for example. Ok, we usually do not think of preparing diner as an design activity, we should. Design (the activity) is all about creating…read more
